Acd. Arnel N. del Barrio joins the teaching force of the Institute of Animal Science.
The Institute of Animal Science welcomes Academician (Acd.) Arnel N. del Barrio as the newest member in its roster of faculty. He was stationed at the Animal Production Division of IAS to teach dairy science courses.
Acd. del Barrio is homegrown to the IAS – College of Agriculture and Food Science where he obtained his BS Agriculture, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science, specializing in ruminant nutrition. He also completed his post-doctoral program at Kansas State University.
From 1993 to 2014, Acd. del Barrio served as a researcher, extension worker, and eventually administrator at the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Carabao Center (DA-PCC) at UPLB before he transferred to PCC National Headquarters in Nueva Ecija as Executive Director. He took pride in his program “Enhancing Milk Production of Water Buffaloes through S&T Interventions” which he and his team completed in October 2019 before filing for early retirement at PCC in 2020.
His passion and dedication as a scientist led him to bagging notable awards from leading institutions in science and technology. He was recognized as Outstanding Young Scientist in 2000 and Scientist I in 2014 by the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST-PHL). He was the 2010 Outstanding Center Director at PCC, the 2016 Distinguished Alumni for Animal Nutrition and Production, and the 2017 Philippine Society of Animal Science Distinguished Fellow. During his time at PCC, Acd. del Barrio published over 50 articles in both ISI and non-ISI journals/conference proceedings, and 17 papers in books or chapter of a book.
Backed with decades of industry experience in research and administration, his recruitment as a member of the Academic Teaching Staff of IAS is deemed beneficial not only for the University, but also for the dairy industry. He acknowledges the major role of livestock in ensuring food production and commits to support the vision of “Future Proofing” the university through his service in instruction, research for development, and extension for the benefit of the Filipino people.
He has been serving as Adjunct Professor at the UPLB Graduate School and has been actively involved in mentoring graduate students specializing in dairy science. His appointment as Professor under the Non-Tenure Track was recently approved by the UP Board of Regents (BOR).
Dr. del Barrio was the second Academician – next to Dr. Francisco M. Fronda (+) – from the Institute of Animal Science recognized by the NAST-PHL, the country’s highest recognition and advisory body on science and technology.
