Dr. Veneranda A. Magpantay, professor and outgoing head of the Animal Production Division at the Institute of Animal Science (IAS), is recently appointed as the new Secretary of the College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS) effective 1st of January 2022.

Dr. Magpantay completed the degree in BS Agriculture and MS in Animal Science from IAS, CAFS at the University of the Philippines Los Baños in 1999 and 2004, respectively. She obtained her PhD in Genetics, minor in Statistics and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from the same university in 2018.

As a young and driven fresh graduate, she started her career with IAS in 1999 from the ranks of Instructor, teaching foundation courses in Animal Science, and climbing to the ranks of Professor. Dr. Magpantay currently teaches Advanced Courses in Poultry Production, Special Topics in Animal Science, and has been advising undergraduate and graduate students of animal science and biotechnology.

Dr. Magpantay is not new to handling administrative posts as she served as Deputy Director from January 2012 to August 2013, and as Officer-in-Charge from August 2013 to December 2013 at the then Animal and Dairy Sciences Cluster, College of Agriculture, UPLB.

She is confident that the Office of College Secretary (OCS), as a student- and service-oriented unit of the CAFS, can deliver quality and efficient services by streamlining its activities and programs which is paramount to achieving the vision and mission of the OCS.

While she also acknowledged stumbling blocks concerning SAIS pre-registration raised at the OCS early in her assumption of office, she also mentioned that these problems can be addressed with the strong link with the UPLB Office of the University Registrar and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, as well as partnering with the CAFS Student Council (CAFS-SC) in disseminating information and providing timely feedbacks.

One of the early activities that she is proposing is the OCS Virtual Tour, a re-orientation webinar on OCS staff, processes, policies, and services among CAFS faculty-coordinators and representatives from CAFS-SC. She is resolved that through the OCS Virtual Tour, their office will promote active and proper information dissemination on all academic policies implemented by the University. The OCS will also maintain its active presence in major social communication platforms to reach all its clientele.

To ensure improved quality and efficiency of services, Dr. Magpantay initiated the reinforcement of the Client Satisfaction Survey at OCS, which she believes is a step towards quality assurance and fair performance rating of staff. She also hopes for the cooperation of students and faculty in future activities lead by OCS. To assist her in this transition, Dr. Magpantay acknowledged the support of Dr. Roselyn F. Paelmo, outgoing CAFS Secretary.

Dr. Magpantay is the 2008 Philippine Society of Animal Science (PSAS) Outstanding Young Professional in Animal Science and one of the 2021 PSAS Best Paper Presentation Awardees. She is also a PSAS Life Member and treasurer of the World Poultry Science Association (Philippine Branch).
